The application of advanced composites in aircraft and the new generation of launch vehicles and missiles pose and severe challenges on the traditional methods for nondestructive testing. Techniques such as radiography and ultrasonic C-scan are often difficult to implement due to part geometry or material properties. Advanced Shearography is a new real time laser video interferometer that measures surface strains due to sub-surface flaws in test objects. Test methods using shearography in combination with acoustical, vacuum, thermal or microwave stressing of composite test parts are presently in use to locate and characterize sub-surface and surface flaws in composite aerospace structures. Honeycomb, laminated, foam core and bonded structures are being inspected for unbonds, delaminations and crushed core. Shearography is presently in production use on various aircraft and launch vehicle programs.
