This paper discusses honeycomb as a reliable, lightweight energy absorbing material. Honeycomb has the unique property of crushing (buckling) in a uniform, predictable and efficient manner. This makes it well adapted for energy absorption applications. Different honeycomb material types and various cell configurations will be discussed; properties of some of Hexcel standard and new products will be shown. Various energy absorbing applications will be described: such as Hexcel Truck Mounted Crash Cushions, various aerospace impact limiters, packaging and transport crash protection, and other applications.
