Modern structural adhesives provide the potential for joining fibre reinforced polymer composite materials such that the strength of the joint at ambient temperatures is greater than the interlaminar strength of the composite. The performance of such joints is influenced in particular by the type of adhesive used and the form of surface preparation. For two part epoxy adhesives the method of mixing and dispensing the adhesive also plays an important part in the resulting joint strength. The paper describes the experimental procedures used for adhesive selection for the joining of GRP materials both to themselves and to other adherends. These procedures incorporated various modes of loading including impact. The influence of surface preparation was also investigated for a range of mechanical preparation techniques and for the case of peel plies on the GRP surfaces. For marine applications a major uncertainty is the overall durability of both the adhesive and the GRP material. The factors influencing the durability of polymeric materials in a marine environment have been reviewed and the results of a study into the effects of immersion in seawater are analysed in the light of possible mechanisms.
