In motor vehicle industry there exists a continuous demand for cheaper parts. The heat treatment and machining cost from usually an essential part of the total manufacturing cost of hot forged parts. Consequently, effective ways to reduce the total cost are the elimination of the separate hardening and tempering treatment through the utilization of forging heat and the reduction of the machining cost through the improvement of the machinability of work piece material. The elimination of the separate quenching and tempering can be realized by air cooling or direct quenching from forging heat. This concept offers, in addition to the production cost reduction itself, a faster throughput, less handling in general and a lesser need for heat treatment investments. An effective utilization of forging heat presupposes, however, steels especially developed for these processes. The successful application of air cooling or direct quenching requires microalloyed steels or hardenable low carbon steels, respectively. By applying a special calcium treatment, so called M-treatment, machinability of the work piece material can be improved without deteriorating its other properties, such as mechanical properties. Except the lower machining cost itself, this principle gives also other benefits in manufacturing, such as a faster throughput and an increased capacity.
