Since the beginning of the 1980-s coated steel sheet has been used increasingly to protect car bodies against premature corrosion. Also in other industries such as the appliance and the building industry the use of coated steel sheet has grown considerabely. In this investigation Zn, Al-Zn and Al coatings on steel substrates were produced in a continuous and in a batch type pilot plant. An evaluation with respect to adhesion, corrosion resistance an phosphatability was carried out. The adhesion was in most cases comparable to those of electrolytically deposited coatings. The corrosion tests on Al-Zn double layers showed a much improve corrosion resistance compared to conventional electrogalvanized sheet. The possibility to obtain practically unlimited layer combinations by the PVD process opens the door to further improvement in corrosion resistant coated steel sheet.
