In recent years, compression mouldable thermoplastic composites have been introduced as semi-structural materials for automotive applications. Usually the fibers are arranged in a random manner and are either chopped or continuous. These are the so called GMT (Glass Mat Thermoplastic) materials. Besides the advanced thermoplastic composites with carbon fibers and high temperature thermoplastics like PEEK, a new class of thermoplastic composites has now been developed. These materials can be low cost materials containing continuous aligned glass fibers and engineering plastics like PET. The properties of these new materials are four times better than standard GMT. However, the processing of these materials is as simple and as fast as with GMT. Recycling of scrap and parts in other, high performance applications is also very simple. This is a major advantage of thermoplastic composites over thermosets.
