The demands on vehicle brakes have been growing substantially over the recent years as a result of vehicle evolution, commercial pressures on operators and legislation demanding greater levels of safety. Since the first commercial installations of Telma retarders some 35 years ago, in the region of 500000 units have been fitted, the vast majority controlled by a simple hand control. As a result of the recent massive increase in the use of on-board electronics, retarder controls and integration with vehicle foundation braking have evolved substantially with many opportunities for additional future safety systems.
