The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) program PACE (Prediction of Aerodynamics and Combustor Emissions) has been used to model various Aero-Engine intake anti-icing system configurations. Three different air distribution arrangements within the nose cowl were analysed using PACE, togehter with the external (engine intake) air flow at this location and, also, downstream of the exhaust slot from the cowling. Agreement between the PACE predictions of surface temperatures and experimental measurements (obtained from full-scale tests in a wind tunnel) was found to be generally very good. The internal nose cowl geometry was noted to influence the effectiveness of the cowl lipskin heating and the spent anti-icing air (emitted through an exhaust slot in the cowling) is allowed to join the main engine inlet flow to provide heating of the downstream surface. It is concluded that CFD modelling of this kind can provide a useful design tool.
