The temperature of steel in service is a factor of considerable importance in the choice of a grade of steel. To find out more about the phenomenon, steel surface and air temperatures were both measured experimentally inAntarctica, on samples. It was observed that, when the lowest temperature(on samples) is -30 degrees centigrade, the temperature of steel could belower than that of air, under certain conditions. The lowest air temperature follows air temperature fluctuations quite closely, which means that the integration time for defining the temperature in service must remain small. This article presents the measurements and results, and the influenceof various climatic parameters on steel temperature is discussed. A deterministic model is proposed, based on heat transfer equations, to calculatethe service temperature of steel from simple data ( i.e. air temperature,humidity, wind speed, thermophysical properties of steel). The feasibility of a probabilistic formulation, derived from the deterministic formula, is discussed briefly.
