A theoretical and experimental study has been made of the dynamic behaviour of the electric motor in a submersible downhole well pump. The objectives were to investigate the effects on lateral vibration of the stiffness, damping and inertia of the fluid surrounding the rotor. Results showed that the added mass effect due to the fluid in the annular clearance around the rotor dominated any contribution to the stiffness and had a strong effect on the natural frequencies of the system. Furthermore fluid damping suppressed response efficiently. It became even greater as the axial flow rate through the clearance was increased.
