The IVMS (Intelligent Variable Message Sign) facilitates representing a stochastic traffic process in the form of a Markov process. The aim of IVMS systems is preventive traffic control. The probabilities of occurrence of certain traffic conditions and their transitions are determined and extended approximately through observation of their relative frequency. The information base acquired during the local learning phase is continuously updated in accordance with changes in the traffic process. New traffic situations are added to the existing base of information and are recognized on repeated occurrence, so that the state model undergoes continuous adaptation to the period under observation. The self-learning system and its diverse modes of operating (experience gain, analogical deduction, decision process etc.) has been investigated with respect to its technical feasibility. On the basis of the most modern microelecronics, IVMS systems can be applied locally to control the traffic process. The forecasting capability of an IVMS has been investigated in the laboratory using current simulated traffic data for traffic-jam situations on the motorway. The results show that, after a learning phase, approx. 90 % of the traffic trends forecast by the system are correct. Where there were changes in the traffic situation, advantages were evident compared to conventional traffic control systems.
