An interlinked suspension comprising hydraulic struts interconnected in the roll plane is analytically modeled to investigate its roll and ride performance characteristics, assuming compressible fluid, turbulent flows through the orifice and laminar flows through the connecting lines. A dynamic roll plane model of a heavy vehicle, incorporating hydraulically interlinked suspension struts within a beam axle, is formulated and analyzed for roll moment and road excitations. The feedback effects of interlinked hydra-pneumatic suspension due to fluid connecting pipes on the suspension stiffness and damping are derived and discussed. Effective vertical and roll stiffness of the interlinked suspension are computed and compared to those of an independent suspension. The roll and vertical dynamics of the interlinked suspension are evaluated for excitations arising from an external moment encountered during a turning maneuver and for transient excitations occurring at the tire-road interface. The vertical and roll response characteristics of the vehicle with interlink suspension are compared to those of the vehicle with independent suspension. The simulation results reveal that the inter-axle fluid flow connections within the suspension can provide a significant improvement in antiroll capability and dynamic heave ride performance.
