Legislation within the European Community now means that all new cars sold in the community must be fitted with catalytic converters to reduce exhaust emissions. The performance of catalytic converters can be improved by optimising the distribution of exhaust flow within the monolith brick. Such performance improvements result in longer monolith life and lower costs. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) now provides a powerful means of simulating complex fluid flow situations such as those encountered in exhaust systems. In the present study, CFD has been applied to the simulation of the exhaust flow within two different catalytic converter designs. The objective was to use the results as the basis for making a comparison between the designs and so demonstrate the role of CFD in providing valuable flow diagnostic data.
