The number of vehicles getting sporadic use has increased continuously over the past few years. Experience has shown that use of conventional lubricating oils in such vehicles causes corrosion damage in the engine and the gears. This paper briefly summarizes the corrosion phenomena requiring the application of protective lubricants. The paper presents a detailed discussion of the interaction of various types of anticorrosion additives, i.e. positive and negative synergistic effects, in laboratory and mold tests. The protection of intermittently functioning vehicles during operation and stand-by periods is described, based on prolonged running tests with preventive engine and gear oils.
