The study reported in this paper clearly indicates that application of observers to monitoring, failure detection and fault diagnosis in self-repairing flight control systems is not only feasible but can also be practically implemented in real time. It also indicates that the problem of efficient identification of the failure mode and fast real-time fault diagnosis using a bank of observer-based failure and failure mode sensitive and insensitive filters can be implemented efficiently on a multi-transputer system. It must also be mentioned that failures modes must necessarily be modelled in the form presented in this paper to take advantage of the observer approach. Thus, if there exist any failure modes that cannot be modelled in this manner, the observer approach would not be very useful. An initial study towards extending these techniques to failures corresponding to multiple failure modes indicates that by coupling the above model-based approach with knowledge-based and artificial intelligence type techniques, complex failure modes could be identified in real time. These results will be presented in a subsequent paper.
