It will not be an overstatement to state that composite materials have become 'Solutions in Search of Problems' especially, in the area of advanced aircraft and space technology. It is true that aerospace has provided the proving ground and impetus for many of these new exotic materials, however, their applications have expanded in a wide ranging fields including automotive, constructions and recreations. Composites will continue to find new applications in the futuristic and demanding systems, such as hypersonic plane systems and space stations, but the large scale growth will require lowering manufacturing cost of these composites, availability of more data on service life and modes of failure in the field. Only a few years ago, several of these composites, SiC-SiC, C-SiC, Si3N4-SiC and C-C seemed to be extremly costly and time consuming to fabricate, but today with the developments and automation in manufacturing technology and due to mass production the composites parts and components are readily available at a much affordable price. In this paper, therefore, an attempt has been made to outline and critically discuss these developments in the processing and fabrications technology, as well as current and proposed applications in the aircraft structures and space environments.
