The benefit related to the use of composite materials in the civil aeronautical field are no longer to be demonstrated for certain types of structures. Items such as control surfaces, landing gear doors, ailerons or ATR72 outer wing box, are parts for which current knowledge in composites allows all the associated design and manufacturing problems to be solved. Progress made over the last few years in the composite process industrialization field has reduced both manufacturing costs and non quality. This experience has also been profitable at part design level. The problems solved during successive developments allow Aerospatiale Avions to consider much larger structures for the future such as complete composite wings. A research program on a wing box should allow us to demonstrate the feasibility of a structure on which the load flows are much higher than those on the ATR 72 outer wing. At present, the manufacture of a composite material structure leads to a gain in weight equal to or better than 20 % but is not accompanied by a reduction in costs when compared with a metallic structure.
