Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) is a process attracting interest from both the high and low volume manufacturing sectors of the composites market. Organizations wishing to enter the field have to undergo a learning process for each new component before the production method is completely developed. While the cost of this exercise may be acceptable for high volume manufacturers, those with a range of products, or a low production rate, find it difficult to absorb this cost. The rtesearch project described in this paper addresses the specific needs of the aerospace industry by developing two computer based tools, a process simulation and knowledge based system (KBS) for the RTM process.
