This paper presents one approach (or idea) for the assessment of benefits achieved by means of any well designed operational load monitoring system with respect to the number of maintenance inspections. The idea to reduce the required safety factor for threshold inspections, if individual operational load monitoring is utilized, yielded a reduction of 23 % for the number of fatigue related inspections in the examined case. It is obvious that these values are only valid for the special case investigated here. But it shows that the method provides enhanced maintenance inspections schedules without the estimation that the real loading of the entire fleet is less damaging than assumed in the certification. The assumption that the utilization of all aircraft is constant over the entire service life of the fleet is certainly not right. It may be derived from the calculations that a higher utilization of an aircraft increases the benefits of an individual load monitoring system (and vice versa). There are surely a lot of further benefits of load monitoring, for example better statistics of the load spectra of modern transport aircraft. Operational load monitoring also implies a lot of different arguments which may be regarded as complicated (not all of them are engineering subjects), and therefore have to be discussed by specialists of different professions, for example guarantee claims, or the fact that mishandling of the aircraft may be detected.
