The high temperature and high loads of the military jet afterburner have resulted in the use of perfluorinated polyether (PFPE) greases which are chemically inert, high temperature resistant, and have good resistance to flow. These properties make removing the lubricant for inspection and repair difficult. Tradtional cleaning for PFPE greases was the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) and a lot of elbow grease. With the phase out of CFC's, new cleaning procedures have become necessary. These new procedures require a solvent which is safe to use, fast and can be used in a variety of applications, ranging from flight line inspections to complete system overhaul. Investigations have determined the hydrofluorocarbons (HFC's), specifically the 8-carbon chain lenght, are an exellent replacement for CFC's.
