A prediction of the full scale power of a ship fitted with conventional propellers is usually based on three kinds of model tests: resistance, open water and self propulsion tests. The model tests are analysed and propulsive factors determined, scale effect corrections are introduced and a synthesis gives the power. This procedure works well for single screw ships, it gives acceptable results for twin screw ships but it becomes questionable for ships with ducted propellers. For craft fitted with waterjet systems, where the propulsion unit and the hull are totally integrated, the open water test has lost its meaning and since the flow around the ships with and without working waterjet is quite different also the use of a resistance test becomes questionable. Instead the waterjet system and the hull should be treated as a single unit which means that the major model test will be the self propulsion test.
