The application of waterjets to fast craft of the catamaran ferry or mono hull types with flush intakes is discussed. These propulsors fulfil a role that propellers cannot for operational reasons, mainly of vulnerability, shallow draft and engineering difficulties. In these circumstances the direct comparison of hydrodynamic efficiency has little meaning and wider considerations must be taken into account. Because waterjets for these craft are highly loaded propulsion devices in the extreme they can suffer from severe problems of cavitation and vibration excitation. The elements of waterjets with flush intakes that contribute to these problems are discussed with a view to trying to improve performance. A long held view on the desirability of hull boundary layer ingestion is challenged and a proposal is made for the alternative approach.
