A two stage supercharging solution for a submarine diesel engine has been studied and developed by S.E.M.T. Pielstick. This solution is based on a turbocharger used as a low pressure stage combined with as high pressure stage a compressor which is mechanically driven by the engine. The test bench results of two different 12 cylinders S.E.M.T. Pielstick engines are given. The performances are compared with those obtained with the classical solutions. To conclude, the advantages of the combined supercharging process can be summarized as follows: High specific power for a submarine engine, allowing to reduce the snorkeling periods. Easy acceptance of large exhaust back pressure and large suction pressure dropping, specially in case of submersion control loss or of intake valve closing during a short time. No sensitivity to the effect of the swell even with a period of 30 seconds. Low specific fuel consumption which reduces the total weight on board. Low specific air consumption allowing an attractive sizing of the exhaust and intake pipes. Low exhaust gas temperature. Possibility of ballast tanks blowing off, that is to say to start the engine with an exhaust back pressure exceeding 2.1 bar.
