Reports on the test results with the new high pressure charged diesel engines have already been made. In the meantime, a number of these engines have been installed in ships and placed in service. Numerous practical experiences have been compiled. Beyond this, a systematic development programme has been executed on high pressure charged engines of other sizes of the trunk piston type design. The engines were subjected to long duration tests. Valuable results were gained on the behaviour of major engine parts which are subjected to highest mechanical stresses. Comparative tests were conducted on supercharger units of axial and radial blower design and of different number of stages. In addition, operational data with natural gas has been compiled, which proves the ability to employ this type of fuel for high pressure charging.
