A direct injection single cylinder test engine has been used to investigate the variations in piston temperature, firing pressure and combustion efficiency at different degrees of supercharge. It is shown that, particularly with charge cooling, the increase in piston temperature over the normally aspirated level is rather small even at pressure ratios of 2.2:1 and it can be entirely compensated for by a simple oil jet cooling. The importance of charge cooling is illustrated. Among the efforts to bring about high pressure supercharging in automotive engines, tests with two different methods are described. Tests with a differential driven displacement compressor show that with this arrangement the pressure ratio and compressor power absorption is without any governing devices closely adapted to the optimum requirements over a wide speed range. The shape of the engine torque curve is determined merely by adjusting the fuel delivery characteristics. In test with a 6.12 liter diesel engine including charge cooling, approximately double the output was obtained over the entire speed range with very favourable fuel consumption. In turbo charging a 9.6 liter engine a 45 % increase in b.m.e.p. was obtained. When charge cooling was included in the tests the output could be increased by 90 % compared with the normally aspirated engine. In accordance with the single cylinder tests it is shown that at high pressure supercharge the ring groove temperature can still be maintained below the maximum permissible level, especially when charge cooling is employed. A charge cooler installation in a truck is shown demonstrating the possibilities of efficient charge cooling in automotive vehicles.
