For a long time, white metal has been employed exclusively for the bearings of large marine diesel engines due to its good properties of embeddability and conformability. However, recently the output of large marine diesel engines has increased rapidly, with higher firing pressures in cylinders, and bearings are now undergoing more and more severe operating conditions and hence they sometimes suffer from cracking, especially in the case of crosshead bearings, due to the particular lubricating conditions. In order to cope with these difficulties, the authors introduced tin-lead overlay, tri-metal bearings and tin-aluminum bearings for testing, and after many tests they succeeded in producing crack-free bearings for long service from high tin-aluminum, an alloy specially developed by the authors' company.
