The commercial alloys normally clasified as the 'light metals' have either magnesium, aluminium or titanium as the primary alloying element. Because of the light weight, they are often the materials of choice for transportation systems which require high specific properties for operating efficiency. Mechanical and corrosion properties are sensitive to microstructure and most of the recnet improvements in these alloy systems have been based on improved processing for metal quality and microstructure control. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties of structural aluminium and titanium alloys will be reviewed. Because of space limitations, the focus will be on age-hardenable aluminium alloys and apha+beta titanium alloys. Recent improvements in magnesium alloys, which have primarily occured through alloy purity and rapid solidification processing, will be briefly discused.
