A waterborne silicone/aluminum coating designated WSA15-SN68 has been developed which offers heat resistance at temperatures in excess of 600 deg F and corrosion resistance at film thicknesses of less than 12 microns. Performance testing of the coating is discussed as well as environmental and safety improvements compared to the presently used toluene solvated silicone/aluminum coating. While this coating was developed to protect the exterior surfaces and intricate internal passages of aircraft heat exchangers, its outstanding temperature resistance makes it an excellent candidate for substrate protection in other high temperature applications in the aerospace, transportation, commercial and industrial fields. The coating was developed to replace a toluene solvated silicone/aluminum coating. The waterborne system meets or exceeds the critical performance criteria for abrasion resistance, thermal stability, and heat and corrosion resistance required by the specification for the toluene solvated system. The waterborne system also dramatically reduces VOC (volatile organic compound) content eliminating the need for emission control equipment. Worker safety has been improved by the reduction of operator exposure to hazardous toluene vapor and by the reduced safety risk associated with the higher flash point of the waterborne system.
