It has been issued that large amount of information generated in the ship design and production stages should be adequately managed to integrate the computer-based design and production systems. To manage this information effectively, the approach based on the engineering data management (EDM) technology has been required in the processes of design and production of ship. In the study, the EDM principle for the ship design was suggested and it's functional components required to realize the EDM system were defined. The suggested EDM principle is focused on the ship design coordination work. Through the analysis of the work flow, the information flow model was established in the EDM system. The developed EDM system consists of several software modules such as the database definition module, the database query module, the reporting module, the management module for image files and the graphical user interface module. To implement the EDM system, relational database management system, embedded structured query language (SQL), C programming language and OSF/Motif were used as software development tools.
