A resistance prediction method has been developed for fast, displacement monohulls, catamarans and trimarans to be used at the early stages of design. The method is based on the Michell integral for thin ships and a regression correction. The correction has been determined by fitting, with regression analysis, the difference between the resistance predicted by the Michell integral and model experiments over a wide range of Froude number, for over 30 different hull shapes including several catamarans and trimarans. The method has been applied for studying the effect of the main particulars on the resistance characteristics of fast vessels. The results include comparisons of the regression correction to the actual difference between the Michell integral and model tests. A benefit of the method is that it is applicable to both mono- and multihulls thus allowing reliable resistance comparisons for different types of vessels at the preliminary design phase.
