Higher cost efficiency and shorter development cycles demand an increased use of different simulation tools in the early design stages. This trend can also be seen in the development of vehicle drivelines. One way of getting realistic velocity profile as important input data for driveline simulations is to register such profiles during test drives. In chapter 2 the Institute's measuring equipment is shown. A further possibility of getting velocity profiles is to use traffic flow simulation. The Institute's traffic simulation program VERSIMA is described in chapter 3. Chapter 4 focuses on the Institute's modular diveline simulation programme FASIMA II. Using this tool the dynamic behaviour of any kind of driveline can be evaluated. For that purpose not only the driveline but also the driveline control has to be modelled. The points of interest in the simulations are fuel/energy consumption, exhaust emissions, driving performance and load characteristics. Different configurations of hybrid vehicles have been examined in cooperation with car manufacturers. Each configuration has advantages and disadvantages. Some examples of our simulation results concerning hybrid vehicles are presented in chapter 5 to show the high efficiency of simulation techniques in the evaluation of car behaviour. The results of a test carried out on a compact middle-class vehicle are presented. Standard vehicles with five-gear manual transmissions were compared to parallel and series hybrid versions, whereby it was shown that using the hybrid drivelines does not necessarily lead to lower fuel consumption.
