The use of magnesium diecastings in automotive components continues to grow at an unprecedented annual rate. Between 1996 and the year 2000 the tonnage required for magnesium in automobile parts will increase globally at an average of 15 % per year. The use of magnesium in structural diecastings will surpass, after the turn of the century, the largest present market for magnesium, aluminium alloying. This growth is being driven by the challenges faced by each and every automobile company, 'Lightweighting', 'Improved Fuel Economy' and 'Environmental Performance'. This paper examines the projected growth curves through 2008 and the driving forces behind that growth on components as instrument substrates, seat frames, transmission housings, steering column components, engine valve covers and other parts. Projections are made geographically for North America, Europe, Japan and Korea. Specific properties that favour magnesium in these applications, such as ductility, elongation and adequate high temperature creep performance will be briefly discussed.
