This paper describes initially the design and operation of an instrument 'Fuel Ignition Analyser FIA 100/2' used in these investigations. This instrument has been developed in Norway on the basis of long term research on marine fuels performed at the Norwegian Institute of Technology and the Norwegian Marine Technology Research Institute - MARINTEK. The paper describes typical test results and presents the ignition properties as observed on a large number of marine heavy fuels collected world wide as well as on some uncommon diesel engine fuels. Test results from ignition investigations on marine distillates are also described. The conversion of a recorded ignition quality as an ignition delay (in milliseconds) to an equivalent Cetane Number (designated FIA CN), is described. Correspondingly based on test results of problem fuels, lower limits for the ignition quality for heavy fuels are suggested. In the paper is also indicated the ongoing research and development on this test methodology and the data processing, in order acquire more fuel related informations from the recorded test data.
