Designing an instrument panel made of polypropylene presents new challenges which were not significant for engineering plastics and requires an expertise which is in constant evolution. Polypropylene material performance is rapidly improving and will offer further improvements in mechanical performances and subsequently lower function cost in the near future. The specific properties of polypropylene require that the design of the part is optimum. Two examples are given illustrating the extent to which FEA, in combination with a good material and application knowledge, can be used to effectively design with polypropylene.
