Previous studies suggest that drum brake squeal is caused either by variations in the friction coefficient or contact geometry between the lining and drum. The noise radiated from other brake parts are commonly considered as a resonance excited by shoes, so that nearly all presented dynamics model consisted of only drum, shoes and linings. However, the mechanisms of squeal have not yet been understood completely, so that it is not easy to establish an accurate finite element model of drum brake squeal, especially in determining some boundary conditions. A three dimensional elasticity dynamics model of drum brake is presented, by which the drum vibration while squealing can be investigated more accurately than two dimensional model.
