A study was performed to improve the sound quality of a centrifugal blower used in automotive applications by reducing the rumble and blade passage tone noise from the blower. Blower cut-off geometry and scroll modifications were studied. Such modifications showed up to 20 dB noise reductions at the blade passage tone frequency and up to 6 dB reductions in the rumble noise at lower frequencies. Noise reduction was accomplished in conjunction with improvements in airflow performance.
