A prototype ultrasonic evaluation system in which electromagnetic acoustic transducers quickly and nondestructively determine the residual stress state at the rim of cast wheels for railroad freight cars is presented. The electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) system can accurately and reliably measure the average residual hoop stress through the rim thickness of Class C railroad wheels to within +/-60 MPa. This resolution is adequate to reliably and consistently determine the residual stress state of in-service railroad wheels and discern damaged from undamaged wheels. Railroad wheels and the type of damages they encounter are described with an explanation of the operation and application of the EMAT system.
