Three new Gotland-class submarines have been built to replace the Sjoeormen class submarines that were sold by the Swedish government to Singapore. The Gotland class is the first conventional submarine in series production to be equipped with air-independent engines for quiet and efficient operations. Several measures were taken to ensure the creation of a discrete submarine. These include the refinement and development of previously used technology, new technology with double elastic mounts, redesign of the hull, and a more efficient fluid sound muffler. The three submarines demonstrated a high level of reliability, endurance, seaworthiness, impact-resistance, and a well functioning weapons system following at-sea tests.
