The separation of diesel exhaust particulate matter has long been a challenging filtration task. Given the combination of sub-micron size with attached organics, at high concentrations in a high temperature, limited restriction environment, few filtration systems are providing a reasonable solution. Reasonableness may be defined as a cost effective combination of loading capacity, separation efficiency, simplicity and durability. For applications where periodic servicing is practical, a replaceable exhaust filter can provide the required performance and robustness, while minimizing total operating costs. One such product is known as the Serviceable Diesel Exhaust Filter (SDEF). In the paper, the need for such a system, the basic system design, present uses and performances are outlined. This type of exhaust particulate collection system is contrasted with other filter technologies. The SDEF filter element can hold up to 1 kg of particulate matter in its approximate 400 hour service life, depending on operating conditions. The maximum temperature is currently 350 deg C with plans to extend that limit. The SDEF has a measured efficiency of 80 %. It provides a reasonable solution to the needs of the materials handling industry, with an attractive combination of high efficiency and capacity in a simple, non-complex system.
