As the North Sea oil and gasfields have developed more corrosive conditions have been encountered, and as a result of this the use of stainless steels has increased. Due to their high strength and good corrosion resistance the duplex stainless steels have become popular in high pressure systems. Presently materials are considered with thicknesses up to 100 mm and with operation temperatures down to -50 deg C. The experiences from offshore applications through project and operations are summarized. Some of the complications occuring and special considerations which are needed with duplex stainless steels are discussed.
