Powder forging bridges the gap between conventional powder metallurgy and drop forging, combining low cost net shape manufacturing with high strength materials. Due to improved mechanical properties, outstanding geometrical accuracies and highly reliable process capabilities, powder forging (PF) has gained a worldwide acceptance for high strength structural component applications. The strong demand for light weight engineering and overall low cost manufacturing therefore successfully has introduced PF in the automotive industry. The technical advantages as well as the implications of net shape approach in economical benefits due to substantial savings of subsequent machining and operational costs for components ready to assemble are illustrated on powder forged connecting rods. Due to a unique concept, precision near net shape Krebsöge powder forging provides best in class dimensional and weight accuracies. The reliable processing of high accuracy and tight tolerance preforms is less expensive than subsequent machining. With regard to connecting rods, new tailored materials have to respect the best possible ratio of price, strength and machinability.
