Several lightweight, noncontact profilometers (LWPs) are now available to measure profiles of newly constructed portland cement concrete pavements (PCCPs). As-constructed smoothness measurements were obtained with four LWPs and the California-type profilograph on four newly constructed PCCP sections in Kansas. The LWPs used were the Ames Engineering lightweight inertial surface analyzer (LISA); K. J. Law T6400; International Cybernetics Corporation (ICC) all-terrain vehicle (ATV); and Surface Systems and Instruments, Inc., LWPs. Smoothness measurements were also obtained with two high-speed profilers: South Dakota-type profilometer and K. J. Law T6600 profiler. Data were statistically analyzed by the analysis of variance and the least-squares means approaches. Profile index (PI) values for LWPs were statistically similar to those for the California-type profilograph, which, on average, reported lower PI values for most of the sections. The international roughness index (IRI) values reported by LISA, T6400, and ICC ATV profilers were statistically similar. The South Dakota-type profiler reported IRI values statistically similar to most reported by LWPs and the K. J. Law T6600 profiler. However, some significant differences were observed when the K. J. Law T6600 profiler and SSI LWP were compared. Variable coefficients of determination ( R2) were obtained by doing a linear regression analysis between the PIs obtained with LWPs and those obtained with the California-type profilograph. Correlation analyses were done with PI and IRI data for individual sections and all sections for a given profiler. The relationship between these smoothness statistics appeared to be both site specific and equipment dependent.
