Detailed requirements for ship monitoring, quantified based on a number of distinct operational scenarios, are compared to the system parameters of Sentinel-1, ESA’s future spaceborne SAR. It is found that Sentinel-1 can probably serve the majority of the scenarios to an acceptable extent. At the same time, any improvements in the system’s parameters (such as noise level, swath width, etc.) would still increase the value of the system for ship monitoring purposes.
