Active ranging sensors, including sonar, radar, and LiDAR, are the focus of this chapter. It begins with the principles of operation of active ranging and detection, followed by a detailed exploration of signal processing techniques specific to these sensors, including mixing and matched filters. The chapter also covers range‐based odometry, providing insights into its application in navigation. MATLAB examples of range‐based odometry and implementation of FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) ranging signal processing are included to illustrate practical aspects, supplemented with problems and references.
