This chapter presents a method to perform automated file format fuzzing over USB by building a fuzz testing environment using emulated file systems. It does a deep‐dive on the injector part but will also briefly discuss the monitor part. The chapter provides some background on attacks using the USB interface and file parsers as an attack vector and highlights the need for file format fuzzing. It discusses the common challenges performing file format fuzzing over USB on automotive systems. To overcome these challenges, the chapter presents a solution based on using emulated filesystems to automate file format fuzzing. Since more automotive systems contain USB interfaces that support numerous file formats, which often require complex file parsers, there is a risk that bugs or vulnerabilities that are triggered may cause the automotive system to crash or behave erratically.
