Flight testing requires some standard definition of atmospheric properties such that we can readily analyze and compare data from different flight tests and normalize the data to standard conditions. This chapter introduces the standard atmosphere, starting with the fundamental principles of hydrostatics. Standard variations of pressure, temperature, density, and viscosity as a function of altitude are derived, with a discussion on how to operationalize those models. Following this, theoretical values of these properties are compared with actual values measured in a high‐altitude balloon flight. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the various kinds of altitudes used in aviation.
