This chapter addresses the use of composite materials in the design and manufacture of friction brakes for automotive applications. The front brake assembly is considered specifically in the chapter since this is generally the higher duty brake on any road vehicle. However, much of what is discussed in the chapter can apply equally to the rear brake, particularly if this is a disc rather than a drum. The chapter concentrates on the rotor and stator materials since these represent the heart of any friction braking system. It discusses the materials requirements for the rotor as this is where most of the recent composite materials developments have taken place.
