This chapter presents an application of the fleet assignment problem. For this problem, a small hypothetical airline is assumed and has a flight schedule that includes 16 flights. The airline has two fleet types (e1 and e2). The chapter depicts the network structure of the hypothetical airline. In addition, it shows the flight schedules assuming the use of e1 and e2, respectively. Given the values of the different parameters describing the problem, Microsoft Excel Solver is used to determine the optimal fleet assignment to the 16 flights considered in the schedule. In doing so, one needs to set up the mathematical program formulated for the fleet assignment problem in the Excel Solver. Setting up the mathematical program requires identifying which cell is the objective function and whether this objective function is to be minimized or maximized. It also requires defining the decision variables and constraints.
