This chapter provides a brief introduction to automotive‐grade secure hardware, specifically automotive hardware security modules (HSMs). It briefly discusses automotive HSMs and how it is possible to build secure software on top of secure hardware. The chapter explains more details on the need for automotive secure hardware solutions. Furthermore, automotive‐grade secure hardware comes in various flavors. To provide additional insight, the chapter presents some background on the types of automotive HSMs that have emerged through the years. Finally, to show how automotive HSMs can be used as the root of trust to overcome the software‐based only challenges, it discusses some practical example use cases for automotive systems using HSMs – including secure boot, secure in‐vehicle communication, secure host flashing, secure debug, and secure logging.
