The mission of a launcher is to carry a satellite from the Earth's ground to a stable orbit. The main design choices concern the number of stages and the propulsion technologies. As all propellant must be carried on‐board, the primary objective is to reduce the required consumption to reach the orbit. The ascent trajectory is optimized taking into account the launcher mechanical and thermal capacities and limiting the risks in case of failure. In‐flight guidance updates the command in real time in response to any perturbations encountered, so as to reach the targeted orbit accurately. A propellant reserve is defined to ensure the flight success with a probability level of around 99%.
